Specialist Short Break Service - Children (North Staffordshire)
This is a specialist service for children and young people (aged 5-18 years), with a diagnosed severe learning disability and additional complex health needs, which require Registered Nursing Care whilst the child is away from home. These needs may either include severe and significant challenging behaviour, which could not be managed in other respite settings, or medical/physical conditions requiring regular and frequent nursing interventions.
The service provides planned short breaks usually overnight, of varying duration, dependent upon assessment of individual needs, which provides respite for parents and families from the demands of their caring roles.
Children and young people accessing the service will reside in North Staffordshire i.e. Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme or Staffordshire Moorlands.
How do I refer?
Referrals are made via a Joint Multi Agency Respite Resource Panel. This is coordinated and chaired by local authority social care services. Referrals can be made to this panel by professionals involved with the child/young person and their family, but usually by the social worker.
