North Staffs Carers Association
NSC provides a range of free & confidential services to informal Carers from the age five upwards across North Staffordshire. These include monthly groups, 1:1 sessions, activities around health & wellbeing, drop in sessions, age related information, advice & various training opportunities. We have an interactive website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter & a digital remind app to keep Carers up to date with activities and announcements.
The charity supports informal Carers by:
- Offering information, training & ongoing emotional support to Carers of all ages, confidentially & in an appropriate manner.
- Providing information/training to professionals who come into contact with Carers.
- Facilitating communication/consultation between Carers & their local purchasers/providers.
- Seeking & representing the views of Carers on the planning/delivery of services.
Our designated Carers Centre has over 6000 Carers & professionals visiting each year & is a place for Carers to call their own, it is Dementia Friendly & is a registered Safer Places. It provides a warm friendly, environment where Carers can socialise, relax & have a well-earned respite break. Feedback from Carers have called the Centre an “oasis of calm tranquility” with a feeling of a community within a community.
Carers drop in without an appointment and receive advice, information & support on a wide range of issues such as housing, employment, education, services, benefits & health & wellbeing.
Our Adult Carers team offers 1:1 visits in the Carers own home, in the Centre or at a venue of their choice. The support worker completes an assessment with the Carer which will identify how the Carer is currently managing, any support they are receiving & if the Carer has any time off from their caring role. Together the support worker & Carer will look at increasing various types of support to ensure the Carer continues look after their own Health & Wellbeing whilst continuing in a caring role therefore reducing Carer breakdown.
To maximise support they will refer to external organisations & into the Carers Centre which offers a wide range of activities, events & workshops. Carers can also receive support from our telephone befriending service which helps to reduce loneliness & isolation.
nsc Young Carers (YC) Team works with YCs aged 5–18 adopting a holistic family approach. We work with YCs & family members to enhance the YCs personal development & promote a stable cohesive family environment.
Once referred the YC is assigned a support worker who will work alongside them, identifying difficulties & challenges they face as a result of their caring role. They will encourage positive actions/interventions in order to ensure that the identified needs are addressed & resolved.
The support worker will also encourage the YC to be actively involved in the variety of support groups & workshops aimed at improving physical & emotional health & wellbeing giving children a chance to be children.
