Adapting the curriculum and/or environment in colleges

All further education colleges, sixth form colleges and 16-19 academies have a duty to use their best endeavours to secure the special educational provision that the young person needs. Their purpose is to ensure that providers give the right support to their students with special educational needs.

Equality Act 2010

Further education colleges, sixth form colleges, 16-19 academies and independent special schools approved under Section 41 of the Children and Families Act 2014 have duties under the Equality Act 2010 not to discriminate against, harass or victimise disabled children or young people. They must make reasonable adjustments to prevent them from being placed at a substantial disadvantage.

This includes taking positive steps to ensure that disabled students can fully participate in the education and other benefits, facilities and services provided for students.

This duty requires thought to be given in advance to what young disabled people might require and what adjustments might need to be made to prevent that disadvantage.
